{"id":107576,"date":"2017-05-15T13:23:52","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T13:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/armbanks.am\/2017\/05\/15\/246288\/"},"modified":"2024-12-15T13:29:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-15T13:29:21","slug":"armenia-backs-russias-position-in-dispute-with-ebrd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/armbanks.am\/en\/2017\/05\/15\/107576\/","title":{"rendered":"Armenia backs Russia\u2019s position in dispute with EBRD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>YEREVAN, May 15. \/ARKA\/.<\/strong> Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia voted for Russia during a voting of shareholders of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Russian RBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>On May 10, EBRD shareholders overwhelmingly rejected Russia&#8217;s claim that the bank\u2019s ban on Russian investments had breached EBRD rules.<\/p>\n<p>EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti was quoted by news agencies as saying that the decision was &#8220;final and binding&#8221; and that there had been no discussion at the meeting about what it would require for it to restart investments in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Russian economic development minister Maxim Oreshkin described the decision as \u2018an ethnicity-based discrimination\u2019 adding that the rejection of Moscow\u2019s challenge \u201ccreated an extremely dangerous precedent\u2026in fact a new norm, by which an international financial institution can curtail member rights\u201d. He added: \u201cWe see that the EBRD has become a tool of [western] foreign policy and not a development institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Russian RIA Novosti, a large number of countries abstained from voting, including Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, while Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia supported the position of the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the EBRD, which is dominated by shareholders from Europe and North America, refused new projects in Russia because of Western sanctions against Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>The EBRD was founded in 1991 to finance the transition of former communist Europe to market democracy.
