Armenia and Georgia are exploring deeper cooperation in financial technology, including synchronizing instant payment systems, simplifying bank account opening, and implementing unified QR codes, announced by Varlam Ebanoidze, Head of the Financial and Supervisory Technologies Development Department at the National Bank of Georgia.

According to him, Georgia is in the final stages of implementing an instant payment system, while Armenia already has one, opening the door to synchronization.

“This is one of the key areas of cooperation,” Ebanoidze stated yesterday during the Doing Digital 2026 (DDF) forum.

He noted that under current conditions, cargo shipments between the countries take about one day, while settlements can take 2-3 days. Synchronizing the payment systems will significantly reduce this time, improve settlement efficiency, and further boost trade.

Another area of potential cooperation could be the mutual simplification of bank account opening procedures. This would involve a mechanism whereby customers would not need to re-go through the full “know your customer” (KYC) process when opening an account in another country.

Furthermore, the possibility of unifying QR codes for payments is being discussed. In this case, cross-border transactions between Armenia and Georgia could be processed as local ones.

According to Ebanoidze, consultations on this matter are already underway with the Central Bank of Armenia.

Doing Digital 2026 (DDF), a leading forum in the field of digital economy and financial technology, opened in Yerevan on Wednesday.

The Doing Digital Forum annually highlights the most important technological developments, innovations, and economic trends, presenting them to the audience and creating a future-oriented discussion environment. Since its launch in 2023, DDF has brought together over 60 renowned speakers and over 3,000 participants from Armenia, the UK, the US, the UAE, Germany, Australia, and the CIS countries.
