{"id":94287,"date":"2016-01-14T10:53:11","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T10:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/armbanks.am\/2016\/01\/14\/244084\/"},"modified":"2024-12-15T13:21:50","modified_gmt":"2024-12-15T13:21:50","slug":"economist-armenias-economy-can-no-longer-afford-to-depend-on-private-money-transfers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/armbanks.am\/en\/2016\/01\/14\/94287\/","title":{"rendered":"Economist: Armenia\u2019s economy can no longer afford to depend on private money transfers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>YEREVAN, January 14. \/ARKA\/.<\/strong> Armenia\u2019s economy can no longer afford to depend on private money transfers, Vardan Bostanjyan, an economist, said Wednesday at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmenia\u2019s economy had long existed thanks to injections coming from remittances, which produced an illusion of certain stability and welfare,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The past year\u2019s developments, he said, showed that directions of the Armenian economy\u2019s development need some correction.<\/p>\n<p>Bostanjyan is convinced that first of all industry should be developed and a special emphasis should be put on mining industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday this segment of industry dominates the budget revenue, but our policy in this area is extremely primitive \u2013 we load trains with ores and send them to other countries,\u201d he said adding that it would be better to make final products from these ores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmenia produced electric devices, cables and radio electronic equipment in 2015, and in market economy settings we pushed into the background some promising segments of our economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The economist also pointed out that development of small and mid-scale businesses should not be ignored, since they generate 65 to 70% of GDP in developed countries.<br \/>\n\u201cSMEs create the middle class,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Central Bank of Armenia says around $90.8 million came to Armenia in November 2015 as individual noncommercial money transfers.
