Introduction of agricultural insurance inexpedient, prime minister says

YEREVAN, March 29. / ARKA /. Introduction of agricultural insurance in Armenia is inexpedient, prime minister Tigran Sarkisian said Monday in a televised interview with journalists of Yerevan–based and regional TV channels.

“I think that introduction of agricultural insurance is inexpedient and experts who have studied this issue, tell us not to take this road. This is suggested also by international experience,’ he said.

He noted that introduction of insurance suggests that to reduce the risks farmers will have to buy insurances, however, they can not afford it now.

To this end, the prime minister said the government should carry out government-designed programs that reduce these risks, naming for example, the antihail program. He noted that according to studies, introduction of agricultural insurance is quite expensive and small farms in Armenia are not ready for its introduction for the simple reason that it is quite expensive. -0-
