Financial awareness low in Armenia – Central Bank

YEREVAN, April 9. /ARKA/. The level of financial awareness among the population in Armenia is low, member of the board of the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) Armenak Darbinyan told reporters on Thursday, in presenting the results of the survey as part of the national strategy on financial education.

The program was developed to raise the financial awareness levels in the society. It uses unique methods and was approved by international experts, he said.

Financial capacities of the population (knowledge, relations, behavior) were assessed in seven areas – financial involvement, debt management, budget management, savings, economic effects, protection of rights and security, Darbinyan said.

The results indicate the problems in different areas and will be used as basis for developing effective programs as part of the national strategy for financial education, he said.

The survey will be carried out again from time to time to see the awareness and behavior changes, Darbinyan said.

According to the central bank, the survey found financial abilities index is 44% in Armenia, indicative of problems the population has in financial management. For instance, according to the results, most borrowers pay against the debts in time, but only 23% of them know the actual interest rates.

The national strategy of financial education and the action plan for 2014-2019 was approved by the government of Armenia in November 2014. –0—
