Fourth chess tournament for mass media representatives held under VTB Bank (Armenia) sponsorship

YEREVAN, February 12. /ARKA/. The fourth chess tournament for mass media representatives took place Saturday in Yerevan under the sponsorship of VTB Bank (Armenia) and with support from the Chess Academy of Armenia and Sil Maaza Company, the press office of the bank reported on Monday.

The event has been organized by the Association of Foreign Correspondents.

The winner of the fourth championship was Vadim Mkrtchyan, Golos Armenii newspaper correspondent, who has won three previous championships – in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He scored 6 of the possible 7 points.

Suren Baghdasaryan, chief editor at Football Plus newspaper and a well-known TV football caster, came second in the tournament with 5.5 points, and Narek Vardazaryan, a haymedia.am journalists ranked third.

They all received cups, diplomas and money prizes, and the winner received the cup from Armenia Chess Champion Hayk Martirosyan.

Other prizes were handed to journalist participants as well – to Norayr Shoghikyan from hetq.am and Ara Nalbandyan, an independent journalist, for the nicest win, to Ruben Margaryan from Golos Armenii for will-to-win spirit, to Vadim Mkrtchyan from Golos Armenii for the fastest win and Arthur Buniatyan, 72, the chief editor of Aspet newspaper, as the oldest participant.

As many as 17 journalists from different media resources competed at the tournament, which consisted of seven rounds and was held on the chess blitz system. Ten minutes was given to each couple of participants for one game with additional five seconds for each step.

Vahagn Khachatryan, internationally certified arbiter and deputy chairman of the Yerevan Chess Federation, was chief umpire at the tournament.

“The aim of the tournament is to promote chess development in the country and foster sport lifestyle in the journalist community”, said Tigran Hovhannisyan, the president of the Association of Foreign Correspondents.
