Police tracks down person who assisted in stealing money from ATM in Yerevan

YEREVAN, August 27. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Investigative Committee revealed details of a theft of large amount of money from an ATM in the capital city Yerevan owned by Conversebank.

It said on August 21 the bank’s security unit reported that a large amount of money -7.2 million drams (almost $ 15 thousand) – had been stolen from one of its ATMs in Yerevan with the use of special device on August 17. The criminal case into this crime was launched the following day by the Arabkir Police Department.

After a set of investigative and search measures the police managed to identity the person who was directly involved in the theft from the ATM. It is a 39-year-old resident of Yerevan who facilitated the theft by providing information to other people.

The man was charged under paragraph 1 of part 3 of Article 38-181 (attempted theft of a large-scale sum, committed by using computer equipment) of the Criminal Code. Based on the request of the investigator, the court ruled that the man could be taken under arrest or released on pending investigation on a 6 million drams (about $ 12,400) bail.

The investigator informed the prosecutor about the court’s decision, saying it could be appealed. The preliminary investigation continues.

In another crime citizens of Russia are suspected of embezzling a particularly large amount of money from a bank’s payment terminal. The Investigation Committee said the amount – 15.13 million drams (about $31,400) was stolen on August 17 between 22.00 and 22.14 from a cash payment terminal at Yerevan-City supermarket. The criminal case into this crime was launched by the Kentron and Nork-Marash Police Department. The Police said the identities of the thieves were established- they are citizens of Russia.

One of them was discovered and charged with embezzlement of especially large amount, committed with using computer equipment. On August 20, a local court allowed his arrest. The stolen money was recovered. Police said they are looking for the other person involved in the crime.-0
