Armenia to begin first grant project for early screening of breast cancer

YEREVAN, September 24. /ARKA/. The Republic of Armenia has fulfilled the conditions for the entry into force of the US $1 million grant agreement signed with the Eurasian Stabilization and Development Fund (EFSR). The money will be spent on purchase of medical equipment for early detection of breast cancer, the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) said.

As part of the program designed to modernize prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in the primary health care sector, equipment will be delivered to medical institutions in Armenian regions of Lori, Syunik and Tavush.

An agreement to that end was signed between the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), its Eurasian Stabilization and Development Fund and the government of Armenia in 2018 April.

On September 14, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia approved a plan for procurement of medical equipment. Procurement procedures will begin before the end of this year.

Within the framework of the program, a mobile mammogram will be acquired to conduct further studies throughout Armenia and implement medical educational programs.

According to the Ministry of Health, breast cancer in Armenia ranks first in the number of other types of cancers. In recent years, the country has seen an increase in the incidence of breast cancer. Screening programs are expected to help detect the disease at an early stage and prevent its spread. –0-
