YEREVAN, September 16. /ARKA/. On September 16, 2025, the Central Bank of Armenia puts into circulation “100th birth anniversary of Henrik Malyan” silver collector coin.
As reported by the Central Bank, the commemorative coin was minted at the Polish Mint. It is made of 925 silver, the face value is 100 drams, and the circulation is 300 pieces.
On the obverse of the work by Lusine Lalayan is a self-portrait of Malyan, frames from his films “Triangle” and “Slap”, and a film strip. On the reverse is a portrait of Malyan, stylized mountains and a numerator, the author of the sketch is Vardan Vardanyan.
About Malyan
HENRIK MALYAN (1925–1988) was a prominent Armenian film director, screenwriter, laureate of the State Prize of the Armenian SSR (1975), and People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR (1977) and the USSR (1982).
He was born in Telavi, Georgia. From 1945 to 1951, he studied at the directing faculty of the Yerevan Institute of Art and Theater, then improved his directing skills at the Moscow Institute of Theater Arts.
From 1951 to 1954, he worked as a stage director in various theaters in Armenia and staged numerous performances. In 1954, he began working at the Hayfilm film studio. Guys from the Army Band (1960), Road to the Stage (1963), and Mr. Jacques and Others (1964) were his first films.
The Triangle (1967), We and Our Mountains (1969), Father (1972), Nahapet (1977), and A Piece of Sky (1980) are among Malyan’s best and award-winning films. The films directed by Malyan were screened at international film festivals in Cannes, Delhi, London, Hong Kong, Sanremo, Tokyo, and Manila, and as part of screenings of Soviet and Armenian films in Holland, Italy, England, the USA, Australia, France, Argentina, and other countries.
In 1980, he created and headed the Yerevan Film Actors Theater-Studio (which bears his name as of 1988). It was here that he staged the Fairy Tales play based on Hovhannes Tumanyan’s tales, which is an audience favorite to this day. The film-play A Drop of Honey was shot in 1982 on the basis of Fairy Tales.
Malyan’s work has greatly contributed to the evolvement and international recognition of Armenian national cinema. His films present a unique combination of national and universal themes.
