Avetik Isahakyan (1875-1957) was a prominent Armenian poet, novelist, public figure, and publicist. He was also an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1943). He was born in Alexandrapol (now Gyumri).
In 1897, Isahakyan’s first collection of poems, “Songs and Wounds,” was published in Alexandrapol. In 1909, Isahakyan wrote his famous poem “Abu Lala Mahari,” whose protagonist is the poet himself, personifying the nation’s pain and suffering, experiencing personal tragedy.
In addition to his literary work, Isahakyan was involved in national political activities, for which he was repeatedly persecuted. For nearly 20 years, he was forced to live and create far from his homeland: in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France. In 1936, Isahakyan returned to his homeland. In the final years of his life, he was surrounded by the nation’s love and veneration, earning the respectful title “Varpet” (Master).-0-
