Owners of about 85% of vehicles buy insurances, bureau of car insurers says

YEREVAN, May 3. / ARKA /. Owners of about 85% of vehicles registered in Armenia have bought insurances, according to the latest and specified data, published today by the Bureau of Car Insurers.

Armine Hakobian, a press office of the Bureau, told ARKA that a total of 412,000 insurances were bought as of April 25.

Earlier she said a total of 11.2 billion drams were collected as insurances premiums and 925 million drams paid as compensations. She said also that 631.7 million drams worth claims were under consideration. The insurance companies said they received about 10,000 calls about road accidents and about 6,000 written applications.

The mandatory insurance against physical damage caused to other cars and individuals became mandatory in the country on January 1, in accordance with a government-drafted law passed by the Armenian parliament last year.
Car owners can insure also against some additional risks, like insurance against theft of a whole vehicle and/or components thereof, fraud and sinking. According to the latest data, there are about 430,000 or so vehicles registered in Armenia. ($1 – 370.68 drams).-0-
