Central bank issues commemorative coins dedicated to painter Makhokhyan

YEREVAN, May 31. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Central Bank has issued commemorative silver coins “Vardan Makhokhyan-150”. The bank said it has issued 500 coins with the face value of 100 drams.

It said the obverse of the coins depicts a fragment from Vardan Makhokhyan painting called “The Coast of Capri.” The reverse depicts a fragment from the canvas “Restless Sea. Coast.” The coin was designed by Lusine Lalayan. They were minted in Lithuania.

Armenian artist Vardan Makhokhyan was born in 1869 in the city of Trapizon in Turkey. His paintings are scattered around the world, most of them in private collections. There are only 29 paintings in Armenia. One of the artist’s paintings ‘Rough Sea on the Caucasian Shores” was sold in 2006 at Sotheby’s auction for $40,000. -0-
