Armenia seeks to resume accepting “Mir” cards, but the problem remains unresolved

YEREVAN, September 29. /ARKA/. Armenia is indeed looking to reinstate the capability to process payments via cards from the Russian Mir payment system, yet the media has inaccurately portrayed the circumstances, Lusine Gevorgyan, Chairperson of the Tourism Committee, told the ARKA news agency.

Previously, various media sources, referencing Gevorgyan, reported that Armenia had officially declared the forthcoming reintroduction of Mir cards and QR code technology for Russian tourists.

“Our banking system, in collaboration with our partners, is endeavoring to identify solutions to the payment system challenges faced by Russian and other tourists. Nevertheless, the Tourism Committee does not possess the authority to outline specific timelines or solutions to this issue. My statements were taken out of context. I intended to convey that our country is actively pursuing solutions, but this was misrepresented as a confirmation of the information. This is inaccurate,” Gevorgyan stated.

At present, the majority of Armenian banks do not support Mir cards, with only VTB Bank (Armenia) ATMs available for cash withdrawals. -0-
