Armenia’s currency plunges deeper today

YEREVAN, December 15. / ARKA /. Armenia’s national currency, the dram, has plunged deeper today to 471.78 drams per one US dollar, the Central Bank reported, saying also that the greenback’s value against the dram has risen by 8.97 points from December 12. It said the exchange rate of euro against the dram has also jumped by 10.91 points to 585.95 drams.

No transactions with US Dollar were effected today at NASDAQ OMX Armenia stock exchange, where the demand price was set at 471 drams per one USD.

Earlier the Central Bank said it would be selling $6 million to local commercial banks daily until the end of the past week and publicize information about these transactions.

The regulator said also daily currency sales would be gradually lowered in the following weeks. It said the shift to this new policy was prompted by the need to stabilize the situation in the financial market.

In order to curb speculative currency trading the Central Bank has increased the rate on Lombard REPO from 10.25% to 21%.-0-
