Armenia ratified an agreement with IBRD on $80 million water supply modernization program

YEREVAN, March 4. /АРКА/. At its meeting on Wednesday, the National Assembly of Armenia ratified the credit agreement with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD, the structure of the World Bank) under the program of improving water supply and irrigation services in Armenia.

The agreement was signed in September 2025. As reported earlier by the World Bank, the first stage of the “Improvement of Water Supply and Irrigation” program, calculated for the period 2025-2031, includes a loan in the amount of $80 million. from the IBRD and co-financing from the French Development Agency, the EU and the Government of Armenia, for a total sum of $185 million.

As Aramazd Galamkaryan, the chairman of the Water Committee, said, the program is aimed at modernization and improvement of irrigation, water supply and drainage of Armenia.

“The program will consist of four main components – reform of the water sector and institutional strengthening of climate-resistant irrigation and rural water supply and drainage systems, improvement of water supply and drainage in rural areas, modernization of irrigation infrastructure and management systems, program management,” he said.

The head of the department also noted that the National Center for designing systems and infrastructures in the water sphere and conducting research works will be created.

According to him, the program is multi-stage, the first stage is calculated for 5 years.

“About $185 million is planned for the first stage, and about $250 million for the second,” Galamkaryan said.

According to the World Bank, the total package of financing under this program for the next 10 years, approved in June 2025, is $435 million, of which $330 million – from IBRD. The project will be implemented in Ararat, Armavir, Kotayk, Aragatsotn, Shirak and Tavush regions.
