Central Bank of Armenia warns of a new wave of telephone fraud

YEREVAN, May 26. /ARKA/. The Central Bank of Armenia has warned citizens of a new wave of telephone fraud.

“Recently, there has been an increase in cases of fraud via phone calls, as well as phishing messages sent from international codes +63 and +212 via SMS, iMessage, and RCS,” the Central Bank said in a statement.

According to the regulator, scammers often pose as employees of telecommunications companies and ask citizens to change their phone settings, supposedly to improve their internet connection or activate 5G.

The Central Bank reminds that no telecom operator or bank requires such actions on a phone.

The regulator urges citizens not to install apps or files from links sent by unknown persons, not to grant access to the phone screen, and not to disclose passwords, verification codes, personal information, or bank card details.

The Central Bank also recommends not responding to iMessages or RCS messages received from unknown international numbers, not clicking on suspicious links, and blocking and marking such addresses and numbers as spam.
