Armenian dram is 30 years old: Yerevan hosts international conference on etymology and development of national currency

YEREVAN, June 9. /ARKA/. Armenia’s national currency, the dram, has become 30 years old this year. To commemorate this historic date a two-day international conference titled “The source study value of the coin” kicked off at the Armenian History Museum.

Dozens of researchers from Armenia, the U.S., Russia, Lebanon, France, China, Great Britain, Switzerland and Iran are taking part in the conference organized by the Armenian History Museum. Specialists will share their own research results, ideas and thoughts in the field of numismatics.

The conference focuses on important numismatic issues in the context of their historical, cultural, modern, national and state importance.

The Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Hovhannes Khachatryan told ARKA News Agency that the conference looks into the etymological issues of the Armenian currency, as well as the history of the formation, creation and development of the dram in the past thirty years.

“Today the Armenian dram by its characteristics is a monetary instrument equipped with high level security systems,” he noted.

Speaking of commemorative coins, Khachatryan stressed that the Central Bank periodically issues them to popularize Armenia’s prominent statesmen and important events in the country’s history.

“Our commemorative coins are appreciated at various international exhibitions. We are known in the numismatic world as a country producing quality and interesting commemorative coins,” he said. -0-
